Foundations of our culture
attalus (ancient Greek) v. 1. to increase. 2. to nourish.
A Rich History
King Attalus, “the Preserver”, created the powerful and secure kingdom of Pergamum in 230 B.C. He was succeeded by his elder son, Eumenes II, who then ruled for 38 years. During Eumenes’ reign, his younger brother, Attalus II, refused the entreaties of the Roman Empire to overthrow his brother, thus earning himself the name Philadelphus (Brotherly Love). Upon Eumenes’ death, Attalus II Philadelphus ascended to the throne. During his reign, Attalus II founded a city in Asia Minor. The city was named Philadelphia to honor the integrity and commitment he had demonstrated toward his brother. The City of Philadelphia in Asia Minor prospered for centuries.
